Farming is busy. Its 24/7. Luckily, here at Donia Farms we have a great team of people that allows the family to (for the most part) take Sunday’s off. Nearly every Sunday our family gathers after church for Coffee Time. Its a time where we catch up on things (not farm/work related!) and the kids play! It always a full house (With 8 of us adults and 11 kids under 10!)
These Apple Bar’s are a repeat recipe for Sunday Coffee! Pat, (Mom/Beppe/Grandma) has been making them for YEARS! They are a favourite and best served warm with a generous amount of whipped cream.
They are a few steps to make but come together easily and pretty quick! From our kitchen to yours, check them out and cook them up for your own Sunday Coffee Time.

Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9 x 13 inch pan with butter and set it aside.
-
Make the Crust: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and egg, Next, use a pastry cutter to work in cubes of cold butter. TIP: Instead of a pastry cutter you can use a cheese gater and grate the cold cheese, then work it into the flour mixture with your hands! Work the butter into the flour mixture until the butter is in small pieces, no bigger than a pea.
-
Reserve one cup of the crust mixture and set it aside for the topping. Press the remaining mixture down in the greased pan to form the crust.
-
For the Apple Layer: Place the thinly sliced apples over top of the crust. It does not have to be perfect! In a small bowl combine the Tbsp of sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle this over the apples.
-
For the Third Layer: Whisk together the one cup of sugar and flour in a bowl. Set aside. In a separate small bowl combine the melted butter, eggs and apple juice. Whisk the liquids into the flour mixure, then pour it over the apple layer.
-
Sprinkle the top with the remaining flour butter mixture from the crust.
-
Bake for 50 minutes or until edges are golden and apples are tender.
-
Serve warm with generous amount of whipped cream!
