Marble Heart Cookies

Category: Sweets
Best for: Baking
Serves: 24 Cookies

Marble Heart Cookies. Just in time for Valentines day. Cute, and delicious on their own or with a glaze. Add these to your February baking ASAP!

Make sure you allow 1 hour for the dough to chill. Then, its a few simple steps to create the marbled effect.

Once chilled, divide the dough into four separate balls.

Knead one of each colour together to form a new ball. Be careful not to over knead. Once you roll the dough it will combine more. The more you roll it out, the more you will loose the marbled effect.

Place one of the dough balls in the fridge and roll the other one out. We like to roll it out in icing sugar, but flour works great, too.  Roll to approximately 1/2 cm.  Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes. Note, you will loose some marble effect when you re roll, so make sure you make the most of your rolled dough!

Bake at 350 degrees for 9 minutes. The bottoms will be just golden.  Is there anything cuter!? Delicious on their own or with a glaze. We like to leave the really marbled ones plain and then glaze the ones that do not have as pretty of a marble.

Ingredients
3/4 cup
1

Egg

2 tsp

Vanilla extract

1/2 tsp

Almond extract

2 1/4 cups

All-purpose flour

1/2 tsp

Baking powder

pinch

Salt

3/4

Granulated sugar

Icing sugar (for rolling out dough)

Red food colouring (or colour of choice)

Glaze
1 cup

Icing sugar

2 tsp

Corn syrup

1/4 tsp

Vanilla or almond extract

Instructions
  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, or with a hand held, Cream butter for one minute. Add in granulated sugar and cream for additional two minutes.
  2. Add in eggs and both extracts. Beat until well combined.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, combining well.
  4. Remove half of the dough and roll into a ball. Wrap it tightly with cling wrap and place in fridge.
  5. With the remaining dough, add desired amount of red colouring. (start with 3 drops and go from there to get desired colour) Or, choose the colour of your choice! Roll into a ball and place in the fridge.
  6. Allow dough balls to cool for a minimum of 1 hour, up to 1 day.
  7. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove dough balls from freezer, and divide them both in half. You should now have 4 balls, 2 of each colour.
  8. Take one ball of each colour and knead them together forming a new ball. (Do not over mix! (See pictures) Place one of the marbled dough balls in the fridge until you are ready to roll it out.
  9. Roll out the dough in icing sugar to 1/2 cm. (Use flour if you would prefer) Cut into desired shapes and place on cookie sheet.
  10. Bake for 9 minutes. Bottoms will be just brown.
  11. Glaze
For the glaze, whisk all ingredients together. Add desired food colouring and drizzle to decorate.
